When you're in large towns and cities, you'll find that most people can speak English, which is American/English. There may be some rare occasions when no-one speaks English and even if there are always people around that speak English, it will endear you to the locals if you can speak even just a little of their language. To that end, you'll find links below that will allow you to download two phrasebooks. They are by no means exhaustive, but they will give you some phrases for everyday situations and will start you on your way to learning the languages.

Tagalog is the main language of the Philippines, while Visayan/Cebuano is the second most spoken language. Visayan/Cebuano tends to be used mostly in Mindanao, Cebu and Bohol, while Tagalog is used nearly everywhere else. You'll find though, that a lot of people can speak Tagalog in Mindanao, Cebu and Bohol if needed. There are actually over 100 distinct indigenous languages and dialects, of which only about 10 are important regionally.
